Michigan Stadium construction began in 1926, as the University sought to replace Ferry Field with a larger venue. It's initial capacity was 72,000. The stadium opened on October 1st, 1927 with a 33-0 win over Illinois Wesleyan. BL006525

This picture of the 1869 Michigan baseball team is the earliest known group photograph of a Michigan athletic team. Captained by Fred A. McManus, it was the sixth season of Michigan baseball. There is no record of opponents or scores from the 1869 season. BBT1869
This group photo of the Class of 1905's women's basketball team is an example of early women's athletics at Michigan. This women's team predates the first men's basketball team, formed in 1909. BL017933
The 1981 Michigan volleyball team was the first women's team at Michigan to win a Big Ten Championship, in the conference's first year sponsoring the sport. Led by coach Sandy Vong, they compiled a 37-17 overall record, including a 5-1 record in the Big Ten Tournament. They finished 8th at the AIAW National Tournament.
Tom Harmon, who played football at Michigan from 1938-1940, stands on the field with a muddy face and torn jersey. All known copies of this image include the inscription to his coach, Fritz Crisler, who coached football at Michigan from 1938-1947 and was Athletic Director from 1941-1968. BL006650
